At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the gales through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy here struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
